My local domestic violence shelter has made a facebook post using John Lennon’s “Imagine” to motivate us to think of a world without violence. John fucking Lennon, who beat his first wife and wrote several songs glorifying violence against women. I mean, think of the motivational possibilities inherent in some of his other creations:
Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better keep your head, little girl
Or I won’t know where I am
Think about it! I know that fear and anger is a far better motivator for me than some hippy-dippy, emotionally vacant song written by a self-aggrandizing misogynist with enough apologists to populate a small country. But of course he said he regretted it later, and abusive men never ever do that, right? If I don’t let go of this distrust, how can I ever live in harmony with the brotherhood of man? If they let me speak to that boy again, that is, and don’t leave me flat, because they told me not to do that. Imagine all the people, uncritically consuming the works of violent men!
